However, despite strong strategic commitment and investment, many AI initiatives fail to scale, with stalled pilots, underperforming models, and limited operational impact.
The root cause of these challenges is not a lack of advanced algorithms or technical capability. Instead, the primary issue lies in the underlying data environment. Telecom operators generate vast amounts of data, but the data is fragmented, inconsistent, and poorly contextualized. Over decades, OSS (Operations Support Systems) and BSS (Business Support Systems) have evolved primarily to handle transactions, not to support AI-driven insights. This has led to static, inconsistent, and manually stitched data. AI systems, which depend on accurate and timely data, struggle in such conditions. What they require is not more data, but better data—data that is real-time, contextual, and reflective of how the business operates.
Telecom operations are inherently complex, driven by interconnected lifecycles. These lifecycles span onboarding, billing, and fault resolution across multiple systems. Traditional architectures were not designed to manage this level of dynamic complexity. Rigid workflows make changes slow and risky. Introducing new products, updating pricing models, or modifying network configurations can take months, and issues are difficult to diagnose and resolve. In this environment, AI is often forced to operate on outdated or incomplete snapshots of a constantly changing system.
To address these limitations, telecom operators need a fundamentally different approach—a lifecycle-aware, real-time model that treats events as state transitions of core business entities. By making these lifecycle transitions observable and governed in real time, operators can achieve greater transparency and control.

This enables legacy systems to participate in a modern data ecosystem without needing to change their internal structures. The result is a flexible architecture where data is continuously available and usable in motion.
As the telecom industry continues to explore concepts like autonomous networks and AI-driven operations, the importance of a strong data foundation becomes even more apparent. Ambitious visions of automation and autonomy cannot succeed without accurate, real-time, and context-rich data. Without this, AI risks becoming more of a conceptual showcase than a practical tool.
Success with AI requires real-time lifecycle governance, event-driven architectures, and a shared semantic framework. By focusing on these foundational elements, operators can move beyond isolated AI experiments and unlock its full potential as a reliable and scalable operational asset.
