Brooks Shannon, Esri's director of emergency communications solutions, explains how Geographic Information System (GIS) location has bolstered public safety's ability to save time when responding to outdoor emergencies. He also describes how GIS technology can be used to enhance indoor-location information, but the necessary accurate indoor maps often do not exist today for many facilities. Shannon says that indoor-mapping tools are improving rapidly and expresses the hope that indoor mapping is completed for all U.S. buildings by the end of 2031.
IWCE conference attendees can learn more about this topic by listening to Shannon and several other panelists as part of a session entitled "Bringing Maps Inside: GIS for safer buildings everywhere." This session is scheduled for Monday, March 15--the first day of the IWCE conference.
